Lot Essay

‘The color in the Antarctic was a complete surprise to me. I had expected only the white of ice and snow, but this is not so. It is black, ochre, dark green, and blue, with an oyster-colored sky and an indigo sea. The colors appear as if under intense moonlight.'

(The artist quoted in ‘As Sidney Nolan Sees Antarctic’, The Australian Women’s Weekly, 15 September 1965, p.10).
