Sans titre was originally planned as an illustration for Le marteau sans maître by René Char, published in 1934, but was not used in the final publication. A photograph of the present work is included in the Pierre Matisse Gallery archives, which locate the work at the Galerie Rive Gauche. It is also documented in the record of drawings by Yves Tanguy, compiled by Kay Sage, listed as “20D”.
