Lot Essay

This gouache is a preparatory study for the lithograph Scène de famille executed the same year. It represents the painter's sister, Andrée Terrasse, lovingly embracing her infant son Jean. Bonnard also painted an oil painting titled Mère et enfant inspired by this work.
