Lot Essay

This jovial scene of drinkers and backgammon players is almost identical in composition to a painting by Hals which is dated 1628 (last recorded in 1957, also with P. de Boer, Amsterdam; see Nehlsen-Marten, op. cit., p. 280, no. 117), which features a dog at lower left.
