From the 1730s onwards, Panini painted a number of versions of this highly popular composition. The best known of these are in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, datable to circa 1734, and in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, which is signed and dated 1747 (F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini, Rome, 1986, p. 419, no. 374).
