Lot Essay

The present watercolours are typical examples of Guardi's small Venetian landscapes, which were often produced by the artist as souvenirs for travellers on the Grand Tour of the 18th Century.

The souvenir nature of Guardi's postcards mean that similar versions can be found in collections across the world. Notably a comparable view of St Mark's Square can be found in The Courtauld, London (inv. D.1952.RW.2539). An equally comparable example recently sold in the Collection Hubert Guerrand-Hermès (Sotheby's, Paris, 19 December 2023, lot 1067, sold €15,240).

Further, a similar sheet featuring the view of The Punta della Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute, is in the A. G. Leventis Collection, Nicosia (inv. AGLC 306).

For another pair of Venetian views by the artist, see lot 200.
