Lot Essay

The present portrait is a previously unrecorded variant of Gardner's portrait of William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt. Two other versions are known, both of which depict the sitter in a red coat with blue facings, for the other versions see Jeffares, op.cit. J.338.1375 (illustrated) and J.338.1377 (unillustrated) and G.C.Williamson, Daniel Gardner, London, 1921, p. 101, illustrated and p. 114.
