Lot Essay

The design of these wall-lights was influenced by the oeuvre of Jean-Charles Delafosse, leading designer and tastemaker of the goût grec from the previous decades. The oversized central volute issuing candle arms appears on a number of his designs, including one for a three-branch wall-light that features a similar distinctive volute issuing fluted candle arms wrapped in acanthus leaves; and another for a two-branch wall-light with voluted back plate and hung with garlands, see l’Oeuvre de J. Ch. Delafosse, vol. II, Cahier 26, nos. 1 and 4, respectively.
