Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848)
Autograph manuscript, 'Studio del Contrappunto' (Contrapuntal Studies), Bologna, 22 November 1815 - 2 March 1817
In brown ink, title ('Studio del Contrapupunto / Fatta da Gaetano Donizetti di Bergamo / Sotto La direzione del Cel.bre Signor Maestro Dn. Stanislao Mattei / In Bologna L'anno 1815. e 1816') and 62 numbered exercises, 84 pages, 198 x 311mm, occasional dates and annotations by Donizetti (e.g. 'Nello spartito questa fuga non và bene cioè non s'incontrano nelle stretto le parti ma copiandole van bene'), a few revisions in another hand (presumably by Mattei). Contemporary light green boards, modern red morocco box.
Compositional exercises by the young Donizetti. Donizetti's earliest musical training was under Johann Simon Mayr (1763-1845) in his native Bergamo, but in 1815 he moved with Mayr's support to the Liceo Musicale in Bologna to study under the renowned teacher Stanislao Mattei (1750-1825): Mattei himself was a pupil of Padre Martini (a canon by whom is quoted on the title page of the present manuscript). In addition to his contrapuntal studies, Donizetti found time in Bologna for a multitude of other compositions, including his first two operas (Il Pigmalione and L'ira d'Achille, although they were not performed), a number of sacred works, two symphonies and a sinfonia concertante.
