For voice and piano on three systems of three staves, 15 bars on one page, 119 x 172mm, cut down from a larger leaf. Provenance: Sotheby's, 23 November 1977, lot 265, bought by: – Musikantiquariat Hans Schneider, Tutzing.
'I shall lament in silence'. Rossini composed almost fifty different versions of this text by Metastasio over the last decades of his life, often as here for album leaves: the choice of text has been thought to reflect his self-imposed silence after he withdrew from operatic composing in 1830.
