Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)
Autograph musical quotation signed ('G. Verdi'), probably from Falstaff, Paris, 18 April 1894
Seven notes in the bass(?) clef, on a single stave, one leaf, 197 x 144mm.
A quotation signed on the day of the Paris premiere of Verdi's great last opera, Falstaff. The quotation is likely a variant on the opera's famous finale, 'Tutto nel mondo è burla', but written in notes of two sizes, with the smaller notes possibly providing a jokey contrapuntal rendering of the fugal theme.
We are grateful to Professor Roger Parker for his help in identifying the quotation.
