Lot Essay

Harold Clayton Lloyd Sr. (1893-1971) was a pioneering American actor and filmmaker, renowned for his influential silent film comedies in the early 20th century. His innovative stunts and relatable character, often depicted as the quintessential everyman, helped shape the landscape of modern comedy and left a lasting legacy in Hollywood.

In 1919, while in search of a new star for his comedy From Hand to Mouth, Lloyd met Mildred Davis (1901-1969) and was instantly smitten. Davis’ collaboration with Lloyd not only contributed to their success on screen but also blossomed into a lasting partnership, as they starred in 15 movies together and eventually married in 1923.

Lloyd commissioned Cartier to create a very personal charm bracelet as a gift for Davis, featuring charms inspired by many their movies and special references to their lives. Notable accents include a thermometer for Hot Water, a sled from Mildred’s childhood, a male figure holding two hearts and wearing a blindfold to signify blind love for their film Never Weaken, a doll to represent Davis’ diminutive stature, a little boy fishing for love to represent The Kid Brother, a parrot charm in tribute to their pet parrot Mika at their home, Greenacres, and a golf bag to represent their shared hobby and the film Girl Shy.

This special charm bracelet not only honors Old Hollywood by capturing the glamour and nostalgia of the era through carefully designed charms, but also celebrates the love and careers of Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis, reflecting their iconic contributions to cinema and their enduring partnership.
