Lot Essay

Fresh to market and from the family of the original owner, the present Vacheron Constantin 222 "Jumbo" may perhaps be one of the best preserved examples in existence. Stored in a safe since the 1980s, the watch remains unpolished and has surface level wear and signs of handling. Furthermore offered with its original sales tag, bezel removal tool, and money clip, this timepiece is a superb grail for an astute collector to acquire.

The Vacheron Constantin 222
Born in the midst of the 1970s quartz-crisis, the reference 222 was launched to commemorate the 222nd anniversary of the Vacheron Constantin. A response to the already existing Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, the present reference was designed by the renowned watch designer Jörg Hysek with an ultra-thin angular case, an integrated bracelet and a two-part case with an ingenuous screw-down serrated bezel. Radically diverging from the already existing design notions of the brand, the wristwatch paved the way for the future sport timepieces of the manufacture.

The present timepiece is the all gold "Jumbo" version of the model which was produced in steel, steel and gold, and full gold. The model was produced for only seven years and made in 700 timepieces across all metal and dial combinations.
