Lot Essay

This portrait of Dominique de Pontizel exemplifies Giovanni Capassini's synthesis of Italian Mannerist and French portraiture, developed while in France under the patronage of Cardinal François de Tournon. The restrained palette and meticulous rendering of fabrics demonstrate the influences of Francesco Salviati and Corneille de Lyon. The sitter, presented in three-quarter view against a neutral green background, conveys austerity and social distinction.

Capassini worked in the studios of Baccio Bandinelli and Raffaello da Brescia before assisting Andrea del Sarto, who, along with Vasari, referred to him as ‘Nannocio’. He moved to France in 1553.
