Pseudo-Jan van Kessel II is a designation used to describe a body of works painted by an artist or studio focused primarily on small still life scenes in the style of Jan van Kessel. While Klaus Ertz classified this grouping as the work of Jan van Kessel II himself in his 2012 monograph on the artist, the moniker Pseudo-Jan van Kessel II has been used in wider scholarship since 2017 to describe these paintings. We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for proposing this attribution on the basis of photographs (private communication 18 March 2024).
