Lot Essay

Once a burgeoning whaling port, New Bedford turned its focus to shipbuilding in the second half of the nineteenth century and found great success in the business. The present lot depicts a weathered hulk moored alongside industrial buildings. In the distance, smoke emits from factory chimneys and creates a haze over the town.

Lemeul D. Eldred was born and raised in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Growing up, he spent time at the town’s waterfront as his father was a local boat builder. This played a significant role in his passion for the sea and specialty in New England maritime scenes.
