A rare tax stamp for "AMERICA"
1765
[STAMP ACT of 1765] – Embossed revenue stamp reading "III • PENCE" below the Royal seal which is headed, "AMERICA." RM24 Die B.
The Stamp that "started it all." A rare survival—an original embossed stamp for use in North America. This example was likely used on a document executed in one of the British colonies in America that did not resist the Stamp Act (e.g. Quebec).
Rare. Very few of these revenue stamps survive, only six examples of this specific die are known extant. Provenance: J.M. Sissons, Sale 392 May 1979 – lot 747; R. Maresch & Son, SALE 189, September 1986, lot 382.
38 x 28mm with period ink mark on verso together with a "5" (mild dustsoiling to verso).
