Lot Essay

Peter David (1707-1755) was born in New York of French Huguenot ancestry. David began his career apprenticed to Peter Quintard (1699-1762) in New York, for whom he possibly worked until around 1734 despite being granted his freedom in 1731. David likely moved to Philadelphia soon after his marriage to his cousin Jeanne Dupuy (1716-1752) in 1735, where he worked possibly right up to his death in 1755. Silver by Peter David is quite rare at auction, with the only recent sales including a square waiter sold at Sotheby's, New York, 23 January 2022, lot 231, and a tankard sold at Freeman's, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19 April 2016, lot 78.
