Lot Essay

Alexander Harrison was born in 1853 in Philadelphia, where he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy. In 1879, he left for France, where he spent the remainder of his life, primarily in Paris and Brittany. Renowned for his stunning views of crashing waves with meticulous attention to light—such as the present work—Harrison's paintings are in numerous public collections, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
