Lot Essay

Likely from a life-sized Attic funerary monument or naiskos, this head of a woman features an idealized visage with deeply-set, almond-shaped eyes beneath gently-arching brows, a straight nose and full, bow-shaped lips. Her hair is summarily rendered, arranged in a loose double-knot above her forehead and covering the tops of her ears, with the lobes pierced. For related examples, see nos. 3.391a and 3.392b in C.W. Clairmont, Classical Attic Tombstones, vol. III.
