Lot Essay

In his foreword to Spooner's 1989 book, Barry Humphries says of the artist's work: 'They are, in fact, ill-described as cartoons, since they are very finished drawings. If Will Dyson was, in the past, Australia's most gifted political draughtsman, Spooner is his successor... he has invented a style that one might call 'romantic grotesquerie' - a style eminently suited to his sitters.', J. Spooner, op-cit, p. vii.
