Lot Essay

Claude Hoin was especially famous for his pastel portraits. However, several large scale drawings in black chalk heightened with white on thick paper, such as the present sheet, are also attributed to him. Among these is for example a large sheet, Portrait of a young lady, recently acquired by the National Museum in Stockholm (inv. NMH 28⁄2021; O. Magnus, ‘Claude Hoin. A Forgotten Polymath of L’Ancien Régime’, Art Bulletin of nationalmuseum Stockholm, XXVIII, no. 2, 2024, pp. 23-26).
