Lot Essay

For a discussion on the ‘oil spot’ glaze, refer to the catalogue note for lot 1031. The present bowl can be compared to a similar rounded example from the Scheinman collection, illustrated by R. Mowry in Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown- and Black-glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Harvard University Art Museums, 1995, p. 157, no. 50. Another similar ‘oil spot’ bowl was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2022, lot 2840.

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. P123h97 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
