Lot Essay

In December 1966, Hockney travelled from California to New York to meet his friend, the pop artist Patrick Procktor, where they stayed with Mark Berger. Over the holiday period, the two artists met with Charles Alan, Hockney’s gallerist who gave Hockney his first solo show in New York. Having successfully introduced Hockney to the New York art scene in 1964, at the time of their meeting Alan was planning Hockney’s second show for 1967. Alan received a Hanukkah present of three drawings from the two artists: the present lots - Hockney and Procktor’s drawings of each other - and a further portrait of Alan drawn by Hockney.
