Lot Essay

‘Sutherland made his first visit to the South of France in 1947 and from then on spent part of each year there, buying a house at Menton in 1955. This led first to the use of more brilliant colours and a preoccupation with Mediterranean motifs such as vine pergolas and palm palisades’ (R. Alley, exhibition catalogue, Graham Sutherland, Dyfed, Graham Sutherland Gallery, 1982, p. 115).
