JAN VAN GOYEN, FIGURES ALONG THE COAST AT SCHEVENINGEN, SIGNED AND DATED 1638

Jan van Goyen was a major representative of landscape and seascape painting in the Dutch Golden Age, and was responsible for a remarkable body of graphic work. His favourite themes are to be found here: fishing and the coastal life of sailors and farmers. It would appear that the artist worked on this composition several times. There are other drawings showing a group of people standing in the foreground, their backs to the viewer, and a background divided between a foreshore with masted boats and a church tower (notably Edinburgh, National Galleries Scotland, Edinburgh, The beach at Scheveningen, 1653, inv. D 1099; Munich, Staatliche graphische Sammlung, inv. 1909:28; H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656. Ein Œuvreverzeichnis. Représentant majeur de la peinture de paysage et de marines du siècle d’or hollandais, Jan van Goyen est à l’origine d’une œuvre graphique marquante. Ses thèmes de prédilection sont ici représentés : la pêche et la vie côtière des marins et paysans. Il semblerait que l’artiste ait plusieurs fois travaillé cette composition à travers d’autres dessins (notamment Edimbourg, National Galleries Scotland, Edimbourg, La plage à Scheveningen, 1653, inv. D 1099 ; Munich, Staatliche graphische Sammlung, inv. 1909:28; respectivement H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, 1596-1656, Ein Œuvreverzeichnis, Vol. I, Katalog der Handzeichnungen, Amsterdam, 1972, p.126, n°361 et p.71, n°199). Ils présentent au premier plan un groupe de personnages, debout de dos tandis qu'un arrière-plan est partagé entre un estran avec des embarcations mâtées et un clocher d’église.
