A rare late 18th-Century lacquered-brass transit,
signed on the horizontal plate G. Adams Invr. London, the telescope with adjustable eyepiece by screw and slide, with bubble-level suspended on two brackets, with 1¼-inch object glass, located on an axis with two bearings and vertical wheel engraved in four quadrants, with balance weight (the upper gear adjustment missing), the upper horizontal scale with divided hour-scale I-XII-I, with external rack adjustment and single vernier reading off the inner scale engraved 0°-360°, raised on a half-vertical circle incorporating a massive balance weight, engraved 90°-0°-60°, with single vernier and hidden pinion adjustment within the vertical pillar, mounted on the lower horizontal circle with level and cross-bubble, vernier, pinion adjustment and three levelling screws, with miniature Newtonian eyepiece, adjustment screw, in fitted and shaped mahogany case -- 11 5/8in. (29.5cm.) high
