Seldom seen at auction, the highly distinctive Art-Deco style reference 5200 ‘Gondolo’ was introduced at Baselworld in 2013. It was only available in white gold with a choice of either a white dial (ref. 5200G-010) or a blue dial such as the present reference 5200G-001.
The present watch as part of The Generations Collection is a superb example of the reference.
Consciously taking style references from the company’s Art-Deco period wristwatches of the early 20th century, reference 5200 replaced reference 5100, the ‘8-Day Power Reserve’ model launched to celebrate the new millennium in 2000. The updated reference 5200 similarly has an 8-day power reserve, however, that is where the similarity ends. For the reference 5200, Patek Philippe created an entirely new caliber (28-20 REC 8J) with the new feature of a day and date calendar. Made specifically for this reference, it also incorporates many of the technical advances in watchmaking that had taken place since the introduction of the earlier reference 5100. The 8-day power is provided by twin inline barrels. Frictionless, and requiring no lubrication, the new ‘Pulsomax’ escapement has a Silinvar lever and escape wheel and Spiromax balance spring. Fascinatingly, the new caliber allows the day and date indications to advance simultaneously and instantaneously at midnight.
A great looking, distinctively styled, and technically brilliant modern Patek Philippe, this watch is ideal as a collector’s piece and equally as an impressive everyday wearer.
