Lot Essay

This ‘Gold on Gold’ Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ Extra-Thin reference 15202BA is a contemporary horological masterpiece and an outstanding piece of design. Consigned by the original owner, the present watch is accompanied by the full set of accessories.

Made as a tribute to the first yellow gold Royal Oak reference 5402 of 1977, the overall gold aesthetic is gorgeous. The yellow gold-toned dial features the famous AP ‘Petite Tapisserie’ pattern and accurately captures the design codes of the 1977 model. The case is the same diameter of 39 mm. but updated with a sapphire crystal display back, and the movement the incrementally updated caliber 2121.

From its introduction in 1972, the Royal Oak was only available in stainless steel. In 1977, Audemars Piguet introduced the first precious metal Royal Oak, the reference 5402BA in yellow gold. The intention of launching an all gold version (and at the same time a two-tone steel and yellow gold version ref. 5402SA) was to offer a watch that maintained the robust nature of the Royal Oak model yet offered the luxury and prestige of solid 18k yellow gold. 736 examples of the yellow gold reference 5402BA were produced between 1977 and 1990.

The present reference 15202BA was launched to satisfy the demand for a yellow gold Royal Oak imbued with the inimitable style of the first gold Royal Oak 'Jumbo' model. It is unsurprisingly one of the most coveted of contemporary Royal oaks today.
