One of the most striking of Patek Philippe’s mid-century ‘time only’ wristwatches, this very rare, unusual and highly attractive yellow gold reference 1578 is the seldom seen non-chronograph version of the famous reference 1579. Nicknamed 'Spider Lugs' for its angular and luxe styled lugs, it was launched in 1943 and produced until the mid-1960s.
With a diameter of 35mm., reference 1578 was considered large for the period, it was available in yellow or pink gold only, featuring either subsidiary seconds or centre seconds. The centre seconds version was made in two series; the first, produced between 1943 and 1950 with the caliber 12 Sci, featured indirect sweep centre seconds; the second, such as the present watch, produced between 1949 and around 1965, featured the calibre 27SC. The cases were made by Wenger, one of the best Geneva casemakers of the period.
An excellent and beautiful example of this very rare model, it is a prize catch for the collector and a highly wearable classic vintage Patek Philippe.
