Lot Essay

This interior scene of merrymaking fits into the seventeenth-century tradition of brothel scenes, where revelry and sexual suggestion are often veiled in symbolic details. In the present picture, the sexual tension is heightened by the symbolic inclusion of the peach on the table, with the man appearing to squeeze the juice of the fruit into the woman’s drink. The woman gesturing toward his midsection makes the innuendo explicit.
