Lot Essay

The Collège Sainte-Barbe was founded in 1460 on Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement in Paris. Until its closure in June 1999 it was the oldest identified college of Paris. Bouhot was taking drawing classes at the school in 1822 when the present work was painted. A related painting, of circa 1824, is preserved in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet (Peinture du musée Carnavalet, catalogue sommaire, Paris, p. 93f, inv. no. P18).
