Lot Essay

Very little is known about Jacob van Moscher’s life and training. Active in Haarlem circa 1635-55, he adopted a monochromatic palette and compositional motifs featuring sloping dunes, generally anchored by a large tree in the middle ground. Van Moscher's approach was influenced by artists like Jan van Goyen, Pieter Molijn and Salomon van Ruysdael.
