Lot Essay

Over the years Rolex has created many different dial designs with a variety of interesting and unusual materials. Historically, these special dials were reserved for Day-Date and some Datejust models, such as the present timepiece.

The present Datejust reference 16018 features a black Onyx dial adorned with diamond indexes. The 'bottomless' black dial wonderfully complements the yellow gold case and bracelet, creating a timeless and classical aesthetic. Over the past few years, these hardstone dial Rolex watches have been incredibly sought-after due to their rarity compared to standard dials, and since many cracked and broke during the manufacturing process and from wear over the years.
