Born in Kettering, Northants in 1849, Sir Alfred East, R.A. was principally a landscape painter and watercolourist, although he also painted in oils. He attended the Glasgow School of Art and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and was much influenced by the Barbizon painters, Corot, Daubigny and Rousseau.He travelled extensively to Japan, France, Spain, Italy and Morocco. He was knighted in 1910.
