Lot Essay

Brake Baldwin was rare in that he found his subjects not only in the drawing room, but in other parts of the house. Here a nursery maid sits sewing quietly beside a 'Silver Cross' pram, beloved of generations of English children. Toy monkeys, as seen on the grass, were particularly popular at this date. Chalk downland lies beyond.
