Lot Essay

Marilyn Monroe and the legendary Joe DiMaggio wed in 1954 but divorced just nine months later. The proceedings were even briefer, lasting only fifteen minutes, with Monroe citing “mental cruelty” in her filing. In the years following their separation, however, they reconnected and became close friends—a bond tragically cut short by Monroe’s untimely death in 1962. For the next twenty years, DiMaggio delivered flowers to her grave multiple times a week. He never remarried.
