Lot Essay

A woman, richly adorned with jewellery, stands on her chauki, at her toilette. Here, our figure wears emerald and diamond jhumkhas, bazubands, and anklets. Around her neck hangs a long necklace with a sapphire and gold enamelled pendants. Her fingertips and feet are painted with mehndi, a traditional red dye, complementing the red details of the striking shawl wrapped around her waist. Further lavish details, including a large gold water vessel and cup, fill the foreground.

This popular theme appears throughout Delhi painting, depicting scenes of women performing ablutions and cleansing themselves. The pose, a shawl draped over her arm and her hand in her hair, closely relates to lots 13-15 in this sale, and the iconography and stylistic aspects show the links between Delhi and Alwar painting at this time.
