First editions of the cornerstone of modern fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, in the following impressions and states: The Fellowship of the Ring is a second impression; The Two Towers is a first impression in a first state dust jacket (without reviews on rear flap); The Return of the King is a first impression, first state (without the signature mark ‘4’ and type ‘sag’ on page 49), in a second state dust jacket (with reviews on rear flap). Hammond’s bibliography originally noted that the first impression, first state of The Return of the King was marked by the signature mark ‘4’ and sagging type on page 49, but has since corrected this to say that these are indicative of the first impression, second state. The Lord of the Rings divided opinion when it first appeared in print between July 1954 and October 1955, its genre-busting nature thrilling those readers alive to the birth of a new form – heroic fantasy – but attracting unfavourable reviews from some traditionalists within the literary establishment. The fans far outnumbered the critics and the trilogy sold extraordinarily well: the publication of The Lord of the Rings marked a major change in public literary taste, inspiring countless imitations, and it is widely considered one of the most influential fantasy works ever written.
