A crisp copy of the rare first English edition. Originally published in Rome in 1514, this was ‘the first complete system of surgery after that of Guy de Chauliac. It contains an account of gunshot wounds and a section on syphilis.’ (Garrison & Morton). ESTC S105827; Wellcome I, 6620; NLM/Durling 4615 (imperfect); cf. Garrison & Morton 5559.1 (1514 edition).
Folio (285 x 197mm). Double column, black letter. Title within woodcut architectural border, large woodcut initials, a few marginal annotations in several hands, mostly to the Table and ‘The Interpretation of strange wordes’ (without final blank, top corner of f. cxv torn with loss of some text, a little worming, dampstaining). Contemporary blindstamped panelled calf over bevelled wooden boards with two clasps and catches (extensively rebacked and repaired, incorporating most of the original sides, later clasps and catches, hinges split, extremities rather rubbed, later endpapers). Provenance: Initials ‘I M’ to centre of lower cover — early ownership inscription of John Huish of Trowbridge (?) (on title: ‘I am John Huish Booke in Trewbreg’) — John Hands, surgeon, May 1755 (inscription at head of title) — Royal Society of Medicine (ink stamp to title [Medical & Chirurgical Society]).
