Lot Essay

Reverend G. S. Davies, housemaster at Charterhouse, founded a museum to collect “anything and everything” in order to enrich pupil education. The museum opened in 1891-1892, with separate sections for Natural History and Antiquities/Anthropology, and over the decades, Old Carthusians and friends donated artefacts to the institution. Much of the collection of ancient art and ethnographic material was sold in 2002 to raise funds for the museum’s refurbishment.
