Lot Essay

The shaft of this elegant thymiaterion features a muscular nude youth, standing with his weight on his right leg, while his left leg is raised and bent at the knee, atop a claw-footed tripod. The top would have originally terminated in a bowl designed to hold incense. For a similar example, see no. 97.22.22 in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
