Lot Essay

The body of the vessel is elaborately decorated with rows of tongues alternating with bands of stylised lotus flowers and ivy leaves. The neck is embellished with an incised palmette on either side and the mouth is ornamented with beading above tongues.

The high-arching handle takes the form of a tritoness, half female and half sea-serpent, holding a small dolphin in her left hand and brandishing a short club strapped to her right wrist. An acanthus leaf just below her nude torso serves as attachment to the rim of the vessel. The scaly fishtail handle terminates above a female head with long wavy hair attached to the body of the jug.

For a similar handle in the shape of a triton, see inv. no. 85.AM.163 at the Getty Villa.
