Further details
Powder robes were worn over a gentleman's suit whilst his wig was being dressed to protect his clothes. Cf 'La petite Toilette', an engraving after J M Moreau, from the Monument du Costume Physique et Moral de la fin du dix-huitième siècle (1789), illustrated on page 124 of Dress in the 18th Century, Aileen Ribiero. This shows a gentleman attended by his barber and tailor, wearing a robe of this construction.
