Lot Essay

Miniature cabinets of this type were intended for display on a kang, the raised platform that functioned as a daytime seating area and a bed at night. The present example is distinguished by the lavishly carved dragon design that extends across all visible surfaces, including the sides and the top, an exceptional level of embellishment for cabinets of this scale.
For closely related examples, see a lacquer cabinet of similar period and design from the James and Marylynn Alsdorf Collection, sold at Christie’s New York, 24 September 2020, lot 925. See also a superbly carved, larger example measuring 117.5 cm in height, sold at Christie’s New York, 22 March 2024, lot 1124.
