Lot Essay

This blue-ground silk painting depicts Mahakala as Panjaranatha, the enlightened protector of Buddhism. Compare with an 18th-century black-ground thangka of Mahakala from the private collection of Lionel and Danielle Fournier, sold at Christie’s Paris, 12 December 2018, lot 58. Also notable is a 17th-century blue silk painting of Mahakala in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Accession Number: 2006.105).
