Lot Essay

Reference 6098 'Galaxy'
An incredibly elusive treasure, the present Rolex is one of the most desirable and coveted watches from the Maison. Launched in the early 1950s, reference 6098 is blessed with being the largest Oyster case of the period, and was made by Genex S.A. Featuring applied gold star and triangular indices that are further enhanced with applied luminous material, this spectacular watch's beauty is extended and complemented by the matte silvered honeycomb dial. More commonly associated with the celebrated 'Stelline' or star dial reference 6062 made during the same period, this 'Galaxy' timepiece, as mentioned in the Rolex literature from the period, features a large 36 mm. case with presence, thanks to the domed "Ovettone" caseback that makes it sit well on the wrist. The watch also retains its original 'Super Oyster' crown that was only made for 2 years, and often changed out during a standard service at Rolex.
