Lot Essay

Maurice Prendergast painted approximately fifteen fruit still-life paintings circa 1910-13, which exhibit the influence of Paul Cézanne's tilted tabletops and patched color application while also epitomizing Prendergast's own quintessential mosaic-like painting style. Other examples are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago and Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.
