Paul Dougherty was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1877 and trained as an artist at the Académie Julian in Paris. He is best known for coastal views and seascapes, dominated by Impressionistic, sweeping brushwork, as exemplified by Moonlit Cove. Other works by Dougherty can be found in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Brandywine River Museum of Art, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
