Lot Essay

The present work may depict the artist's young three or four-year-old daughter Mabel on the beach at Southampton, New York. J.G. Brown depicts a similar vertical vista of the shore in Waiting for William (1879, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia), which features a young woman in the place of the child seen in the present work.
